If the scent you're after was a common one at the time it was sold at retail, chances are pretty good these sites will either have exactly what you're looking for or they might be able to locate it.

You can also try online auction sites like eBay to see if there are any current auctions featuring the perfume. If not, look at the closed auctions to see when the last auction was held that listed the perfume. This will give you an idea of the perfume's availability.

If you absolutely cannot find the perfume anywhere, and unfortunately this does happen, look into businesses that specialize in custom manufacturing scents. Many of these businesses have formulations very similar to popular discontinued perfumes and they may be able to assist you.

There are also companies that purchase the original formulation from the company that is discontinuing the perfume. They will then produce their own version of the scent, which closely matches that of the original, and market it under a similar name. These reproductions are sometimes easy to spot as many times the packaging is made to look somewhat similar to the original packaging.

You can also look for perfume oils that are very close to the scent you are looking for. These oils are available in over 1,000 different fragrances so even if you can't find an exact match, you can likely get very close to the scent you're after.

Be aware that if you succeed in locating the original discontinued or rare perfume, you might experience some sticker shock. Many of these perfumes are in enough demand that the prices will be higher, in some cases much higher, than you are used to paying. Despite the price, if you find you cannot live without your favorite perfume, seriously consider buying more than one bottle if it's available. As time passes, these rare and discontinued perfumes become more and more difficult to find.

Finally, try making your own perfume. It's really not as difficult as it sounds and you might come up with a fragrance that's either very close to the original scent or maybe even better!
