Treatment Centers for Alcoholism

Treatment centers for alcoholics, also known as alcohol rehabilitation facilities, can play a critical role in an alcoholic's journey to achieving, and maintaining, sobriety. While some alcoholics are able to achieve sobriety on their own, many individuals are not able to attain sobriety without the help of a treatment center. Some individuals enter treatment as the result of an alcohol or drug intervention.

Quite understandably, most individuals have some questions about treatment centers. The following are some of the most frequently asked questions.

What role will a treatment center play in my quest for sobriety?

Treatment centers and alcohol rehabs strive to teach individuals who have a drinking problem, a new way of life. This is accomplished through helping the alcoholic discover what issues are at the root of their drinking, the examination of what role alcohol plays in their lives, the introduction of alternative coping skills, and new ways to live a meaningful and productive life without alcohol.

Can I be forced to go to a treatment center against my will?

No. An individual over the age of 18, cannot be forced to go to a treatment center unless they are court ordered to go.

Where can I find a treatment center?

Treatment centers exist in all 50 states and all over the world. You can find a treatment center by going to your state government's website or looking at the yellow pages under alcohol and drug rehab.

How long will treatment last?

This differs not only with each different treatment provider, but is also based on your individual circumstances.

Will my insurance cover treatment for alcoholism?

Many health insurance companies will cover treatment for alcoholism. However, not all policies will, so it's best to contact your individual insurance provider and ask.

What if I don't have insurance?

If you do not have medical insurance, or your insurance does not cover treatment for alcoholism, look for treatment centers who will work with you regarding payment. Some places will charge you based on your individual financial circumstances or based on a sliding scale.

Do I have to actually stay at the treatment center or will I be able to stay at home?

Treatment centers have different types of programs available. Some centers will specialize in in- patient programs only while others will offer both in-patient and out-patient programs.

Can I tour the facility before I make a commitment to go?

Absolutely! In fact you should definitely go look at the facility so you can decide if it's a good fit for you. Make sure you feel comfortable with the facility itself as well as the staff. You might also want to inquire about the average age of most patients, whether the facility offers private rooms if you will be in-patient, and what a typical day at the facility consists of. **Please note that understandably, most treatment facilities will want to schedule your tour so please don't just show up at the facility you're interested in.

Are all treatment facilities based on the "Twelve Steps"?

Many treatment facilities utilize the Twelve Steps as they have proven to be very beneficial for many alcoholics. However, some facilities recognize that some individuals are uncomfortable with these types of programs and they will offer alternatives.

I've heard that some treatment facilities won't let me have visitors or even make phone calls - is that true?

This might be true at some facilities but not all. In other words, ask! It might help to remember though that if these types of policies do exist it is for the patient's benefit. The staff wants to do everything possible to help you achieve sobriety.

What happens when I leave?

Don't worry! Most, if not all, treatment facilities will make sure you have a plan in place for you new life.

I hope these answers were helpful. It can be very intimidating asking for help. Remember though, these treatment facilities exist to help people in need. They work with many different individuals who have experienced problems with alcohol so there's not much you can say that will surprise them. It's important to be honest with the staff and in turn, you will benefit from all the facility has to offer.
