Tropical area rugs can add a touch of the islands to any room. When we think of tropical style we think of decor that reminds of vacations, ocean breezes, swaying palm trees and a relaxed casual feeling.
You don't have to actually live in the tropics to enjoy the tropical style. You can create the feeling of being in a tropical getaway within your very own home regardless of whether you live in Key West, Florida or Ketchikan, Alaska. If you love to decorate in the tropical style, there are many elements you can add to your room to set the tone.
The best way to set the stage for this style is to start from the ground up. This is where your new tropical area rug comes into play. Once you have decided on your permanent flooring and the colors of the walls it's time to add the rugs. You need to decide what type of rug would look best in the room. Tropical rugs come in several varieties and color schemes. Some rugs are natural shades and tones while others are very vibrant and colorful.
Will you need an indoor or outdoor tropical area rug?
If you have a covered porch you might be able to get away with having an indoor rug outside if it will be protected from the elements. Good quality outdoor rugs come with a special UV coating to help prevent them from becoming faded by the sun. Most outdoor rugs are made of polypropylene which makes them very durable. This type of rug is very easy to keep clean and is suitable for high traffic areas.
You can also look at natural fiber rugs made from sisal, jute, seagrass, bamboo or other natural fibers. The beauty of natural fiber rugs is in the pattern and texture, instead of the color or design. Some natural fiber rugs can be a bit rough on bare feet so it might be best to order a sample of any you are interested in before you decide to purchase online.
Tropical Decor
Indoor tropical rugs come in a wide variety of styles as well. You can choose from a natural color palette of earthy subdued hues, or bright and colorful designs. Indoor rugs are typically made of wool, cotton, Olefin or other materials or blends. These rugs come in a near endless choice of colors and it can be a real challenge deciding which tropical rug suits your room best.
You will probably either be drawn to the muted tones or the more vibrant ones. What do you think of when you think of the word "tropical"? Here are some words that might assist you in deciding on a pattern.
For some people tropical means:
- palm trees and palm fronds
- shells
- fish
- beach and surf
- flowers like plumeria, anthurium, orchid, ginger, protea
For others, tropical is much more subdued and more of a "feeling" than a "visual". These individuals will probably lean more toward the natural fibers rugs discussed above.
Other Considerations When Deciding On a Tropical Area Rug
Be sure to measure your room before ordering to determine what size rug would fit best. If you have a hard time visualizing what the rug would look like, you can use masking or painters tape to lay out the rug border and play around with it until you think it looks best. Also, consider using a rug pad with your new rug as it will prevent your new area rug from slipping around on the floor.
You can purchase your
tropical rug either locally or online. One of the advantages of buying your new rug locally is that some retailers will let you take rugs home to try in the room before you make a purchase. This is a great way to try different rugs in the room. All you have to do is make a deposit which will later be credited toward the purchase price, or refunded if you decide not to make a purchase.
There are also many websites where you can check out what's available in the marketplace. Many of these sites will offer a wide variety and sometimes will even include free shipping. Be sure to inquire about the return policy just in case you should need to return the rug at a later time.
Other tropical decor in your rooms can include wall art, lamps, fun accessories and even furniture. The sky really is the limit, just avoid the temptation to over do it; a little of the tropics goes a long way when it comes to the tropical style.
Tropical decor can
be a lot of fun and will give you that vacation feeling even at
home. Tropical area rugs will lay the perfect foundation.

Good advice about measuring the room. I bought the cutest tropical rug that was too small and it just looked stupid. And of course, too big would be even worse!

Nice hub, Aqua. You covered everything I can think of. :) I think buying locally definitely has its advantages. I bought two Persian rugs in Kabul bazar. They were extremely cheap compared to prices where I live and of high quality too. But then again, buying online is also a great option. I bought one online and I'm very satisfied with what I got. :)
